President's Newsletter
March 3, 2010
Greetings!I'm watching the snow melt outside my window and remembering my pre-BC days when, during this time of year, my thoughts drifted to budding trees, Spring Training, and the fishing opener. Boy how the times have changed! Now I think of seasonal floods on the Red River, severe weather season in tornado alley, and the latest hurricane forecasts. While we all have the same goal - protecting business process and technical nfrastructure, whether its our own or a client's, we all have our unique needs. In March, we will be learning more about one company's efforts to improve resiliency. I'm looking forward to the presentation, and I hope to see you all there (see below for more details).

In other news, the BCPA board has been discussing the role of social media to our organization, and how we, as an organization can better utilize the tools that are out there to interconnect. Please attend the March meeting to learn more about how you can help shape this work. Speaking of how you can help - I have an interest in learning more about how the BCPA can better serve our Small Business members. I'm inviting you to make a difference. If you own a small business, or do DR/BC for a small business, please contact me directly at president@bcpa.org and tell me about your experience as a BCPA member; what's working and what's not.
Thanks, and I'll see you at the meeting!

Next Meeting: March 11, 2010 - Focusing and Measuring Your Continuity Efforts to Improve Resiliency
How do you ensure your organization is addressing its most critical continuity exposures? How do you know if you've reached your goal of resilience? If you're challenged with implementing a business continuity program across a global organization, you may often feel as if you're trying to boil an ocean with little result and no end in sight. This session will showcase how Medtronic, a global leader in the medical technology industry, conducted a company-wide business impact analysis and deployed a new scorecard in order to highlight its key exposures and bring management focus to its resilience efforts. The result: strong management commitment and specific action plans to create a more
resilient organization. The presentation will describe the simple and pragmatic approach that was followed, review the tools and metrics that were developed, and, most importantly, highlight the lessons learned and key points you need to know to successfully bring focus and results to your company's continuity program.
Tanya Raso is the Director of Corporate Risk and Business Continuity at Medtronic, the global leader in medical technology, and has led Medtronic's Business Continuity Management Program for the past six years in addition to managing Medtronic's insurance programs. During her time in this role, she established the organization's Corporate BCM Program Office and developed a standard BCM methodology and process that is being implemented at over 25 manufacturing, R&D and distribution
locations around the world.
